Why Azerçay Is More Than Just Tea

Why Azerçay Is More Than Just Tea

A short history
Azerçay is one of the most recognizable tea brands in Azerbaijan. It grew alongside the country’s long-standing tea culture, especially in southern regions where tea drinking is part of everyday life. More than a packaged product, it became a shared standard. If tea is served, it’s often Azerçay. No explanation needed.

What makes it different
Azerçay is known for strong black tea with a clean finish. It’s not floral, not smoky, not overly complex. The strength is intentional. Tea is meant to be diluted, adjusted, and enjoyed slowly, not chased with tasting notes.

How it’s traditionally served
Tea is brewed strong and served in armudu glasses, the pear-shaped glass designed to keep heat at the top while staying comfortable to hold. Sugar is usually served on the side, not mixed in. Many people take a small bite of sugar, then sip the tea. Milk is uncommon. Lemon is optional, depending on mood.

When tea is served
In Azerbaijani culture, tea is always appropriate. Before meals. After meals. During conversations. When guests arrive. When there is nothing else to do. Tea is not an event. It’s a constant.

Why it matters at Merci Baku
Serving Azerçay isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about keeping things honest. Strong tea, simple presentation, no performance. A moment to slow down in the middle of Brooklyn, without turning tradition into decoration.

Tea doesn’t need to be reinvented. It just needs time.
